Helping You Choose the Right Eyeglass Lenses

With so many products introduced in the optical field every year, he prides himself on making the process of choosing what may and may not be suitable for the consumer an easy process.


Polarized Lenses

Polarized lenses are used in sunglasses to reduce glare from reflective surfaces such as the surface of a lake or the hood of a car. They accomplish this feat through a process called polarization, much like a venetian blind controls sunlight through a window.
Sunlight itself is not polarized - light from the sun will either be absorbed or reflected horizontally, diagonally or vertically. The problem this causes for fishermen and drivers lies in the horizontal reflectivity. Sunlight bouncing off a horizontal surface will strike the viewer's eyes at a similar angle. This means the glare from the surface of the water or the road or the car hood will be strong. Polarized lenses have a laminated surface containing vertical stripes. These stripes only allow vertically-polarized light to enter the wearer's eyes. Glare is eliminated because the horizontally-polarized lightwaves cannot bypass the polarized filter.


Anti-Reflective Coating

Anti-reflective coating (also called AR coating or anti-glare coating) is a microscopically thin multilayer coating that eliminates reflections from the front and back surface of eyeglass lenses.

By doing so, AR coating makes your lenses nearly invisible so people can focus on your eyes, not distracting reflections from your eyeglasses.

Anti-reflective coating also eliminates glare caused by light reflecting from your lenses. With reflections eliminated, lenses with AR coating provide better vision for night driving and more comfortable vision for reading and computer use.

AR coating is highly recommended for all eyeglass lenses, but particularly for polycarbonateand high-index lenses, which reflect more light than regular glass or plastic lenses if anti-reflective coating is not applied.

Also, aspheric lenses, which have flatter curves than regular lenses, often cause more noticeable reflections, so AR coating is highly recommended for these lenses, too. And AR coating is beneficial when applied to the back surface of sunglasses to eliminate "bounce-back" reflections when you are facing away from the sun.

For the best possible comfort in all lighting conditions, many eye care professionals recommend applying anti-reflective coating to photochromic lenses. AR coating improves light transmission through the lenses for night driving and helps photochromic lensesreduce glare in bright sunlight.

 

Progressive Spectacle Lenses

Progressive spectacle lenses, also called progressive addition lenses (PAL), progressive power lenses, graduated prescription lenses, and varifocal or multifocal lenses, are corrective lenses used in eyeglasses to correct presbyopia and other disorders of accommodation. They are characterised by a gradient of increasing lens power, added to the wearer's correction for the other refractive errors. There are hundreds of progressive lenses on the market these days.
